Wow! Another week has gone by! We had a great time on our Game Day! Lots of fun games were sent in. Thanks to everyone who sent in Box Tops, Soup Labels, and Milk Caps so we could win. December's prize is an Olympics game!

Our Powerpoint Presentation of our Animal Unit was well received. The students were very proud to have their parents there.

Some students are totally out of pencils, erasers, crayons, markers, and glue. Please make sure that you send in supplies when your child runs out.

We are busy learning about Christmas Around the World. We are learning about different tradions in other countries. We have "visited" Holland and your child can sing a traditional Christmas carol in Dutch! We will be "visiting" Italy next.

Have a great weekend and I will see you next week at Parent/Teacher Conferences.

Good morning! Just wanted to post an update about our year as well as keep you informed about what is going on in the classroom. Thanksgiving is almost here! We have been busy making turkey puppets which will go home on the 23rd. Next week we will begin making a craft for your Thanksgiving Table. Make sure you look for it around the 23rd also. Our Naked Turkey Project was very fun! Thanks o those boys and girls who returned their turkey on time. They will receive a 100% for their hard work. Those students who haven't turned theirs in will lose 5 points for every day it is late. Wednesday was Veterans Day and we had a great time at our assembly where we thanked our veterans for protecting us.

Please continue to send in Box Tops, Soup Labels, and Milk caps. Our class is currently tied for 1st place! The winning class gets a game day! I know that your child would really appreciate winning.

Some students are not writing in thier journals or turning in their homework on a regular basis. Writing in the journal is graded. After Thanksgiving, homework will begin counting as a grade.

Please continue to send in any art supplies that you would like to donate. The kids love working with the googl eyes, feathers, and popsicle sticks. Would anyome like to donate tempera paint?

Friday, October 16, 2009

Good afternoon! It's been a very fast week, hasn't it! We've been busy walking our miles so we can win the Golden Shoe Award.
Friday, October 23rd, is our Virtual Fieldtrip. This is a majorly secret surprise so PLEASE dont tell your children. Thanks to Mrs. Pfeaster and Mrs. Pennington for volunteering to help us that day. I will post pictures as soon as I have a chance.
Lots of your children are using Spellingcity.com to practice their spelling words. Today's spelling test had a total of 18 students earning a 100%. YIPPEE
As the year goes on, students are starting to not bring their reading journals in. The reading logs count as a weekly reading grade so it's important that the journals are returned every day.
Just a reminder that there' s no school on Monday, October 26th. If you are looking to donate things to the classroom, art supplies would be great! Things like pipe cleaners, google eyes, feathers, felt, etc. are great for art projects.
Scholastic book orders are due October 30th.
Thanks so much for letting me have your children this year.

We may need a couple of parents to help with this so if you are interested please let me know.

Friday is our Walkathon. Please make sure your child wears tennis shoes on Wednesday and friday.

Good morning!

Parent-Teacher conferences went very well. If you have any additional concerns please let me know.

We have been emailing our Trucker buddy Nicole. This is lots of fun and we are learning geography as we do it. Ask your children about Franz and Snickers and about the McDonalds that is shaped like a UFO.

We are also learning how to use Microsoft Word in the classroom. We are working on a surprise to be announced later. Also, your children have learned how to be "Safe" on the internet.

Our mapping unit is going well. We have learned the oceans and the continents. Also we are learning to read Map Keys.

Reading Groups start Monday!

Friday, September 4, 2009

Good morning! It was another awesome week here in 2nd grade!

We are improving our mapping skills. Ask your child how they remember where North, South, East, and West are located.

Math groups have started. If your child has me or Ms. Stokes for math, they should be occasionally bringing math homework home. 2nd grade is all about following, and reading, directions. We've had many discussions in class about doing exactly what the directions ask.

Homework packets are due Friday morning. Please send them back in the Homework Folders. The Reading Journals are due daily. Each child gets 1 point daily for having written in their journal the night before. You will see a -1 (in red) if the day's reading wasn't completed when the journal was brought in to me.

The children love art, music, and pe. If you have a special talent in these areas that you would like to share, please let me know.

As soon as reading groups start, I will be asking for parents to work in the classroom. So keep watch in your child's backpack!

There is no school on Monday.

Have a super 3 day weekend!

TGIF!!

We had a busy week playing Password and Sparkle in class! Ask your child what they are...you might be surprised to know that they can tell you what the word underestimate means.

We had our first spelling test today-10 students received 100%! WAY TO GO!!!

We are continuing our Social Studies Unit on Mapping. The students have learned about globes and continents. They should be able to tell you what continent they live on and what the 4 directions are.

Math groups start Monday. We are very excited to be able to teach your child based on their ability. Look out for math homework that may start next week...depending on who your child has for math.

Scholastic Book orders are due September 10. Also we are collecting milk caps, soup labels, and box tops in class. Please send them in with your child.

Many of you have requested work to do at home. I will be sending home postcards, address labels, and stamps. If you could label them and mail them it would be great!

We have sent our first email to our Trucker Buddy. The kids are excited to learn about where she goes and what she does. We have also received our first postcard from our exchange. It came all the way from Arkansas!

Keep cool and have a wonderful weekend!!

Notes for Next Week

It's Friday!

We had a blast in class this week...but we sure are tired. Your children have been tested on spelling, math, penmanship, and fluency this week. We will continue the testing next week with Reading Comprehension.

This coming week starts "real" school! Homework packets will go home on Monday. Their nightly reading journals will also be going home. They need to write the title of the book they are reading as well as 2-3 sentences telling about what they read.

We will be starting our mapping unit in Social Studies this week. We will continue learning about characters in the stories that we read. In math, your children need to memorize their addition and subtraction facts 0-10. This will help them when we split into math groups on August 31. Our first spelling test will be on Friday.

I look forward to an exciting week next week!

The First Day of School

Today was wonderful! We spent the day learning our classroom rules and procedures and how they affect others. The class went to an assembly this morning to meet Mrs. Montgomery, our principal.

We drew our self-portraits this afternoon and they will be hanging in the classroom very soon :) We are working on our "All About Me" books and it's very interesting to see what your children think!

We did take a spelling assesment and a math-timed test to see where or strengths are. Tomorrow we will take a penmanship assessment.

Scholastic Book orders are due September 10, 2009.

It is an honor for me to be given your children for the day. I want you to know that they will have fun learning something new every day. I have no doubt that they are very tired tonight so feed them well, tuck them in, and send them back to school tomorrow :)

The First Week of School

School has started! On Wednesday we will be learning about our classroom rules and procedures so that we can work well together as a class.

The students will also be taking a spelling pretest so that I know where they stand. This will also let me check their penmanship (very important in 2nd grade).

As the week progresses, the students will be taking assessments in Reading and Math for their groups placements.

Starting next week students will be bringing home Reading Planners. They will write about what they read that night and you will need to sign the planner. These need to be brought back to class every day!

Parents, remember to return your student information sheets.

The school bell rings at 8:25 and the tardy bell rings at 8:30.

Welcome to 2nd Grade

Can you believe that summer is already over? I am so excited to have your child in my class this year! We are going to have an amazing time learning new things and having fun together. 2nd grade is a big transition for most students. They are being given more responsibilities for remembering to bring back their work while having more freedom in the classroom to explore different topics that interest them.

But don't panic! Together, your children and you, will come through just fine. Remember, if you have any questions, plase let me know. This blog will be updated regularly so you can see what we are doing.

I look forward to meeting all of you!

Ms. Blok
